Our history

Grupo Sociedad Azucarera Larios, has its origins in the long track record of the Larios (Marquis of Larios) and Gutiérrez-Maturana-Larios (Marquis of Paul) families from Málaga.

In 1831, the incorporation of the company Larios Hermanos y Cia, founded by Martín Larios y Herreros, marked the start of the Larios family’s business activity in the city of Málaga. At the beginning, they created small businesses, and in the 1840s they made the great leap to the sugar and textile industries, adopting the model of the English industrial revolution.

At the end of the 19th century, the Larios family was at the forefront of the most important urban development plan of the city of Málaga, establishing itself first of all in the city’s narrow streets, and today in what is currently the most exclusive shopping area in Málaga, as well as one of the most well-known ones in Spain. Modern construction techniques of the time were implemented in its buildings, using metallic foundry structures, by way of new trends created by the Chicago School.

Throughout the whole of the 19th century, the Larios family invested in almost all economic sectors, both industry and trade. They were founding members of Banco de Málaga, giving it financial support to all its business activities. They participated in large enterprises such as the development of Ferrocarril Málaga-Córdoba, Compañía de Seguros and Sociedad de Vapores.

In 1890, Sociedad Azucarera Larios, S.A. was incorporated, grouping together all the sugar refineries of Málaga capital, the east coast of Málaga and Motril, with 14 sugar refineries and over 10,000 hectares of sugarcane crops. This activity ended with the sale of the last refinery in 1976.

In 1994, the Gutiárrez-Maturana-Larios (Marquis of Paul) family unifies the different business activities of its estate, creating Grupo Sociedad Azucarera Larios.
